Insect dreams leave a sensation behind — a crawling feeling, the sense of something clinging to you, a faint scuttling sound. And almost everyone searching for this dream feels the same way about it. Unsettled.

Open an old dream manual, though, and it's a little bewildering. Insects were never treated as one category. Each species gets its own entry, and the conclusions go in every direction.

The Conclusion Changes by Species

The old Chinese dream manual Zhougong Jie Meng (the Duke of Zhou's dream manual) has an entire chapter devoted to insects. Gathering its lines together produces this.

• A bee stinging your foot brings the joy of wealth
• A centipede biting you means a long life — auspicious
• An earthworm brings great fortune to fields and to the household
• A pair of dragonflies flying toward each other means a beautiful person is coming
• A mosquito bite means you will lose something
• A fly landing on your clothes always means slander is coming
• Dung beetles gathering in a heap means you will lose wealth
• Bats flying in a swarm means a secret matter will drag on

Read through it, and no single rule emerges. Being stung or bitten leads to both good and bad outcomes.

So a single search term like "insect dream" won't get you very far. The old catalog simply isn't organized that way.

If you remember which insect it was, that's the single most useful piece of information this dream carries.

The "Dreams" entry of the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture (a major reference work on Korean history and culture) doesn't include a confirmed independent entry for insects or spiders in its folk dream-interpretation catalog. The passages above come from a Chinese text, in a different lineage from the Korean list.

A Spider Entry Isn't Confirmed

Let's be honest here.

Spiders are the most-searched insect of all, yet we couldn't clearly confirm a spider entry in the publicly available original text.

Bees, centipedes, earthworms, mosquitoes, flies, dragonflies, and dung beetles are all there — spiders aren't among them. There may be an entry in some edition, but we didn't have the means to cross-check across versions.

So a spider dream's fortune can't be traced to the old records. Modern dream-reading sites make various claims about it, but we couldn't confirm any original-text basis.

The modern side is thin here too. We found no study directly comparing whether people with a spider phobia dream about spiders more often. It sounds plausible, but there's no measured data behind it.

Here's what is confirmed. A literature review on insects and dreams discusses cases where insects actually appear in dreams and their cultural interpretations, and touches on how illness, fever, and environmental stimuli can influence dreams. That same literature, though, doesn't provide frequency statistics.

The hypothesis that dreams rehearse threatening situations in advance does address animals and being chased, but it hasn't specifically tested the frequency or symbolism of insect dreams.

So this article can't answer "how common is this dream."

A Swarm Descended

The most frightening version to remember.

In traditional interpretation, a few entries deal with groups. Dung beetles gathering in a heap means lost wealth, and bats swarming means a secret matter will drag on.

But not every insect swarm can be lumped together. Even those entries specify particular species.

Read in a modern light, an overwhelming number is often read as a matter of being unable to cope. One is manageable to look at; a hundred isn't. We made the same point in our bird dream guide.

That said, no study has verified a difference between one insect and a swarm. This is interpretation, not a finding.

Insects Came Out of Your Body

The type that lingers longest after waking.

In traditional interpretation, there are relevant lines here too. Falling ill and growing insects on the body brings a military post, and insects moving across the body means an illness will ease.

Both are favorable. But the modern reading of "coming out and being released" doesn't appear in the original text. That interpretation was added later.

You Killed the Insect

In traditional interpretation, an entry for killing an insect is hard to find. Entries for catching other animals are plentiful; insects are the exception.

Read in a modern light, actively removing a threat is sometimes connected to a sense of control. This isn't verified, though.

It Was on Your Clothes or Food

In traditional interpretation, there's a line stating that a fly landing on your clothes always brings slander.

Nothing was visible, but something seemed to be there.

In traditional interpretation, this scene has no entry. Read in a modern light, this is less about the insect and more a scene about something unseen.

There May Have Actually Been Something There

This is worth noting.

The observation that whatever touches the body during sleep bleeds into a dream is an old one. Yi Ik (이익, a late-Joseon scholar of the Silhak, or Practical Learning, movement), made the same observation in his essay Monggamnon: what touches the body during sleep becomes part of the dream.

So any of these could have been the material.

• You were actually itchy somewhere
• Your blanket or clothing brushed against your skin
• You saw or were bitten by an insect during the day
• You had some worry related to pest control

None of these can be confirmed as the definite cause, though.

And the literature review mentioned earlier also discusses how illness or fever can influence dreams — the idea being that unpleasant sensory dreams increase when you're not feeling well, though this isn't established specifically for insect dreams either.

If your skin is genuinely itchy or feels off lately, that's worth checking separately from the dream.

An insect dream doesn't diagnose an illness, either. If something is actually bothering you, that's a separate matter from the dream.
